Costly Mistake; Problem Halts TMS Racing from Contending for Win

NEWTON, NC – Labor Day Monday was meant for redemption or TMS Racing. However, a great car still wasn’t enough for the local Newton, NC team to contend for Bobby Isaac Memorial 200 win.

“We had a loose wheel and ran with it for over 70 laps,” commented a dejected Chris Lewis after the 200-lap event this past Labor Day Monday. TMS Racing worked throughout the weekend, fine tuning their #35 The Shoppe Monte Carlo, and prepping for the annual event. “We are disappointed. We had a fast car all weekend in practice, this car was so strong, but it obviously wasn’t meant to be and we’ll move on and regroup for the next race,” continued Lewis.

Lewis qualified his Chevrolet 14th in the 30 car field and despite a tight race car in the first segment of the race he made his way well within the top-10 before the halfway break. “We had the car tight in the first run because we thought the car would loosen on the run, but it didn’t as much as we thought it would,” commented crew chief Tyler Lewis. The team made changes during the break and as the second half of the race started Lewis was ready to march toward the front. “Once the second half of the race started the car was back to where it was all weekend. But then it started to vibrate and the car started to get super loose. I knew something was wrong, but didn’t want to give up track position,” continued Lewis.

On lap 180, during a yellow flag, Lewis brought the #35 The Shoppe Monte Carlo to the attention of his crew. The team fixed the problem and sent Chris back on the track. With just 20-laps left Lewis worked his way to the sixth position and quickly closed in on the fifth place car. “He was cutting me off every lap, on the last lap I got a run going into one and was under him, but he still tried to cut down on me and I just slammed on the brakes so we didn’t completely mess up the car,” said Lewis. The spin put TMS Racing back to the 8th spot on the final run down.
