NEWTON, NC – It may have been 98 days since their last start at Hickory Motor Speedway, but TMS Racing and driver Chris Lewis made a strong return to the 3/8ths mile bullring on Saturday, July 28th. After months of repairs, testing, changes, testing, and more changes, TMS Racing returned in style, finishing third despite being slammed into the back stretch wall going for the second position.
“I just have to thank my brother,” smiled Chris after the third place run. “Tyler and dad have worked really hard on this car and we have all put a lot of time into working on this setup; we continue to get stronger and closer to the setup that this car needs to win,” continued Chris. Lewis qualified sixth for the 50-lap feature but quickly moved into the top-five and then picked off the fourth place position, where he stayed as a caution free race clicked off lap after lap. “We got to far behind passing the fourth and fifth place cars; the leader just got away, but once I settled into fourth we started to real them in. The car was consistent and had it been a longer race or if we had gotten a caution we had a car that would have been able to battle for the top spot.”
The fireworks started early with just a few laps remaining Lewis got a great run on the outside of the 31 and 07 going into turn one (second and third place), but things didn’t end as planned. “I was on the outside of the 07 coming off of turn-two but for some reason they felt the need to drive up to the wall despite me being on their outside,” laughed Chris after the race, “some people drive like that and that’s fine, I’ll race them the same way.” The #35 Smokem Racing Products, ImageFIRST Chevrolet made hard contact with the outside wall, but Lewis never gave up and fought back grabbing the third spot on the last lap.
“All that matters is we had a good car and we have some good changes we can make and test before the Bobby Isaac race. We have worked hard and hopefully it will pay off for the whole team.” TMS Racing will head back to Hickory Motor Speedway on Labor Day, Monday, September 3rd for the running of the Bobby Isaac Memorial 200.
